Cracked Cement Driveways: Do-It-Yourself Repairs

Repairing small cracks in your cement driveway, those up to a 1/4 inch wide, can be done with a shop-vac and some silicone sealant. Use the shop vacuum to remove any dust and debris from the driveway crack. Fill the crack with the silicone, and use a Popsicle stick or finger to smooth it out. Paint thinner can be used with a finger or a damp cloth to get a smoother silicone finish.

Larger cement cracks can be repaired using commercial grade concrete repair kits from manufacturers like 3M, Ace, Cutter, DAP, Diteq, Henkel, Nova, Protective Coating, Quikrete, Red Devil and Seal-Krete. To fix the cracks in your cement, you're going to need a buck and trowel, as well as a shop-vac, and a hand-held grinder to use to "chase" the crack with.

Clean the crack with a brush, or the shop-vac, to remove any broken pieces of concrete or gravel that could be thrown up by the grinding wheel. Then follow the crack with your handheld grinding wheel, grinding the crack to a depth of 1/2 to 3/4 inches along its entire length. When done grinding, use the shop-vac to remove all of the dust and debris from the crack and surrounding work area.

Use the primer that came with your concrete repair kit to fill the crack. If you're repair kit only came with a single product, use it as the primer too. Sprinkle a fine layer of sand over the primer while it's still wet, and then let it stand until it's dry to the touch.

When the primer is dry, you can fill the crack with the main crack filler that came with your concrete repair kit. When the is full and while it's still wet, fill the crack to the top with sand. Using a trowel, now scrape off the excess sand and compound mixture and place it in a bucket. Use the damp sand mixture to fill any holes or cracks that where missed, or aren't completely full. Use the hand grinder to smooth the crack repair once it's dry. With careful feathering of the grinding wheel, the surfaces can be blended so that the crack is no longer visible.
